Lighting the Way to a Better Life.

In the Summer of 2007, Master Gardener, Joe Judge began performing Solar Cooking demonstrations at the Easton Farmers' Market.  And a summer loaded with sunshine-filled Saturdays lent itself to some good cookin'! Market-goers were fascinated by the process and Joe offered curious on-lookers samples of his sun-baked delicacies such as Blueberry Cobbler and Spinach Quiche. By the end of the season, Joe had been officially dubbed the Solar Chef!

Later, Joe shared with me that he had actually been purchasing Solar Cookers for women in Africa by donating money to Solar Cookers International (SCI). This organization has enabled thousands of families in multiple countries to cook food and pasteurize water with simple solar cookers. SCI spreads solar cooking awareness and skills worldwide, particularly in areas with plentiful sunshine and diminishing sources of cooking fuel. SCI has enabled 30,000 families in Africa to cook with the sun's energy, freeing women and children from the burdens of gathering wood and carrying it for miles. To ensure long-term project viability and access to affordable cookers, SCI works to incorporate solar cookers into local economies through establishment of independent solar cooker businesses run mostly by women.

This year, Joe will continue as the Solar Chef but will have his very own Project Sunshine Solar Cooking Station. The Easton Farmers' Market has created Project Sunshine to raise money to purchase Solar Cookers through SCI. The goal by season's end will be to have raised enough funds to purchase 100 solar cookers. To donate to the Sunshine Project, visit Joe at the EFM Solar Cooking Station starting Saturday May 3 rd !
